Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was scheduled to be one of three candidates competing for Ireland's head of state, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, late Sunday he stated in a statement he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I've resolved to leave the election for president right away and go back to my family," he said in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
