One teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.

Tragic Finding

The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.

False Accusations Begin

The inquest learned how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."

In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.

Police Investigation

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was never taken in the first place".

News coverage about the alleged stolen ashes attracted online comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".

The "online posts were really distressing", she stated.

Emotional Wellbeing Effect

She explained that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really mattered to him.

"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was detained at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she talked to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child told her he had entered the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.

Digital Bullying

In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.

The inquest heard that one 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".

She described him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".

He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

School Response

The inquest heard from school staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.

On November 8th, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been detained and that was the initial I heard".

"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's family landline and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.

The court heard his family said they never receive that message.

Official Conclusion

Senior investigator informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.

Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.

"Probably untruths were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the platform of social media.

"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed while investigations continued."

The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any agency led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
